Elevating Sachems Lounge at Mohegan Sun with Immersive Lighting
Nestled within the iconic Mohegan Sun Casino and sheltered beneath the striking architecture of 'Wombi Rock,' the newly renovated Sachems Lounge offers a visually captivating VIP experience. Open to a bustling, multi-story concourse, this exclusive space creates an otherworldly yet intimate atmosphere through masterful, immersive lighting design by Reveal Design Group.
Ken Ventry, Principal at Reveal Design Group, described the lighting design vision as “finding harmony between the linear gestures of the mountain and giving distinction between the softer, more muted tones of the mountain and something in the foreground to draw you in.” The team achieved this balance by using vertical slats to create crisp, distinct foreground elements, contrasted against the softer tones of Wombi Rock.
Warm, low-level accent lighting and thoughtfully placed linear elements create a captivating atmosphere that balances dramatic flair with an intimate feel. As Fantina, Senior Designer at Reveal Design Group, explains, “We aimed to create moments that resonate with guests—where lighting enhances their experience and leaves a lasting impression.”
A key element in the design was harnessing light to create a human scale experience in a massive open space. Instead of simply illuminating from above, Reveal’s approach incorporated light into the bar’s overhang, shelving, counter, and grazing the perimeter of the additional seating areas. "Much of the light has to come from the vertical surfaces," said Ventry, "It was a question of showing through mock-up examples how lower-level lighting at a human scale would affect the dining experience." This approach extended to illuminating horizontal planes and using layers to offer a near, medium, and distant view within the space, creating an inviting experience.
The open layout and the existing lighting from Wombi Rock presented a unique challenge: with no ceiling to mount additional lights, the design team needed a solution that wouldn’t compete with the architectural landmark. Turning to QTL’s advanced lighting solutions, they skillfully routed ZALA SW flexible fixtures in 2400K into the wooden purlins, integrating continuous linear lighting that extends the full height of the bar. QTL’s ability to produce longer fixture lengths enabled a seamless appearance, free from visible seams, perfectly complementing the lounge’s design without distraction. MICRO 5 ATOM fixtures were discreetly integrated into the bar shelves, where the 2200K fixtures cast a warm glow over the displayed spirits, enhancing their visual appeal and adding depth to the space. All fixtures were powered by QZ-PH/0-10V LED drivers, which provide smooth, flicker-free dimming down to 0.1%
Collaborating closely with QTL and the millworkers was crucial in achieving the desired lighting effect. The integration process involved meticulous mock-ups to determine fixture placement and evaluate different lighting scenarios. As Ken recalled, “It was a mock-up that helped us show the difference between a direct view fixture and a recessed one, avoiding a too-bright line of light.” The fixtures were seamlessly integrated into the wood and metal veneer millwork, creating a visually cohesive lighting design that enhanced the lounge’s warm and inviting atmosphere.

The design team created an environment that feels intimate despite being located in the middle of a bustling casino. Fantina summed it up, “I wanted to bring to people’s lives a moment they can remember—a beautiful, intimate experience.”
Through the combination of innovative lighting techniques and close collaboration, the Sachems Lounge has been transformed into a destination where lighting plays a central role in shaping the guest experience, making each visit truly unforgettable.
