Jellyfish Playground: Where Municipal Lighting Meets Imagination

At Seattle’s revitalized Pier 58, lighting transforms a playful concept into a fully immersive nighttime destination. Part of the city’s major waterfront redevelopment, the space blends public art, recreation, and urban design, anchored by a striking 25-foot-tall jellyfish climbing structure that comes alive after dark.

The centerpiece is equal parts sculpture and playground. Its sweeping tentacles, netted climbing paths, and integrated slide create a layered experience for kids, while thoughtfully integrated LED lighting turns the entire form into a glowing beacon along the waterfront. Rather than treating lighting as an add-on, the design weaves it directly into the structure, allowing the jellyfish to radiate color and movement in a way that feels seamless and intentional.

To achieve this effect, Q-CAP BOXA RGBW was specified throughout the tentacles, delivering continuous lines of color-changing light that emphasize the structure’s fluid geometry. Its flexible, encapsulated design allows it to follow complex curves without interruption, while its IK10 rating ensures durability in a high-traffic public environment where play, weather, and wear are constant variables. The result is lighting that performs as reliably as it looks.

Park lighting extends beyond the central feature, shaping zones throughout the grounds and inviting exploration. On the south end, seating steps and gathering areas are softly illuminated using Q-CAP BOXA Static White, providing a calm counterpoint to the vibrant play zone. Here, the focus shifts from energy to atmosphere, creating a place to pause, take in waterfront views, and enjoy the city skyline.

Behind the scenes, infrastructure plays a critical role in maintaining performance and longevity. Power is distributed through Q-VAULT, an IP68-rated, direct-burial enclosure designed to withstand Seattle’s demanding climate. Paired with the Q-SET DC LED power supply, the system ensures consistent output and long-term reliability across the installation, even in wet conditions.

The project required careful coordination between lighting and fabrication teams, particularly in concealing fixtures and routing power without disrupting the clean lines of the design. Every detail, from mounting positions to feed locations, was resolved to keep the focus on the experience, not the hardware.

At night, Pier 58 becomes more than a playground. It’s a destination where light invites movement, interaction, and curiosity. By combining durable technology with expressive design, the project shows how lighting can turn public space into something memorable, proving that even a jellyfish can steal the spotlight.
