Union Middle School in Sandy, Utah, was developed with “thoughtful design,” that aimed to maintain Union’s tradition as a place where students, families and neighbors build lasting connections. As a new proud cornerstone of the community, the school’s “mission” created a more conducive learning environment. QTL was the ideal lighting choice to achieve the mission.

QTL lighting products helped the architects and lighting designers earn 2024’s “Most Outstanding K-12 Project” award by Utah Construction and Design. The double-height commons and dining area fosters social connectivity with a learning stairway and a spacious student courtyard. Lighting designer Phil Borup commented, “The cafeteria turned out phenomenally with that RGB lighting. When you turn off the overhead downlights, the space just really pops with color. It's really cool at night.” Phil specified TRE3, RGBW-High Efficacy, ESSENTIALS and QTM lighting for the cafeteria and their results appear delectable.

QTL TRE3 luminaires deliver bright, evenly distributed illumination that keeps the cafeteria feeling open, energetic and easy to navigate during busy lunch periods. RGBW-HE24/8.0 adds flexible color and high-quality white light to support school events while maintaining comfortable, efficient everyday lighting. QTL ESSENTIALS provide dependable, uniform illumination that improves visibility and supports all-day use.

In a school setting, the commons and dining area function as more than a place to eat—they are social hubs where students gather, collaborate and recharge throughout the day. Lighting plays a critical role in shaping how these spaces feel and how they are used. At Union Middle School, the cafeteria lighting balances energy and comfort, supporting both lively lunch periods and quieter moments between classes.

Layered LED lighting helps the space adapt to changing needs. Bright, evenly distributed illumination ensures safe circulation during peak lunch traffic, while dynamic color lighting introduces flexibility for special events, performances and after-hours activities. This ability to shift mood reinforces the commons as a multi-purpose environment, one that supports school spirit, creativity and community engagement without compromising everyday functionality.

Visual comfort is equally important. Carefully controlled light levels reduce glare and harsh contrast, making the space more inviting and easier on the eyes. This is especially valuable in a double-height environment, where lighting must account for both scale and human comfort. Consistent, high-quality white light helps maintain clarity during daily use, while color accents add personality and excitement when appropriate.

From an operational perspective, high-performance LED lighting supports long-term efficiency and reliability. Durable fixtures minimize maintenance demands and energy-efficient performance helps reduce operating costs over time. Equally important, the lighting design enhances the overall experience of the space, encouraging students to linger, connect and engage.

At Union, the commons lighting helps transform a functional cafeteria into a vibrant gathering place that reflects the school’s mission, supports daily activity and strengthens the sense of community at the heart of the campus.
