It would be hard to find a school in the US with a more impressive exterior and surroundings than Union Middle School in Sandy, Utah. Set against the Wasatch Mountains, the school features an exterior that offers a vivid mix of accent, perimeter and indirect lighting that showcase landscaping, architectural accents, pathways as well as seating and parking areas. It all comes to life thanks to QTL’s outdoor electrical junction boxes that combine weather-resistant durability and premium power supplies.
Lighting designer Phil Borup explained, “The lights underneath all the planters and seating areas turned out great. Flood lights light up Union sign with the drivers hidden in a box in the landscaping. Then, from there, it connects into those concrete benches so you don't really see anything.” A mix of ARKA, QZ, ESSENTIALS and other QTL products create a warm, inviting atmosphere for students, faculty and the community.
At Union Middle School, exterior lighting plays a critical role in shaping first impressions while also supporting safety, security, and wayfinding across the campus. Because the school serves students, staff, families, and the broader community, the exterior environment needed to feel welcoming after dark without appearing overly institutional. Thoughtfully layered LED lighting helps strike that balance, creating an atmosphere that feels open, comfortable and clearly defined.
Well-designed exterior lighting improves visibility along walkways, parking areas and gathering spaces, helping students and visitors move confidently throughout the site. Even, glare-controlled illumination reduces dark spots and visual confusion, supporting safety while preserving the character of the architecture and landscape. By integrating lighting into seating areas, planters and architectural features, the design reinforces the campus layout and encourages use of outdoor spaces beyond the school day.
From a design perspective, exterior lighting extends Union’s architectural identity into the surrounding environment. Subtle accent lighting highlights key building elements and signage, while indirect lighting adds depth and warmth without overwhelming the nightscape. These layers work together to create a cohesive nighttime presence that feels intentional and refined.
Durability and efficiency were also essential considerations. High-performance LED fixtures and weather-resistant components ensure reliable operation in changing conditions while minimizing maintenance demands. Energy-efficient performance supports long-term sustainability goals and helps reduce operating costs over time.
Together, the exterior lighting enhances Union Middle School’s role as a community landmark, one that feels safe, inviting and thoughtfully designed from every approach, day or night.
